Why an llms.txt is worth ten minutes

llms.txt is a short markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that tells AI tools what your business is and which pages matter most. It's quick to add and easy to keep tidy. It's also not magic: it's a proposed standard, AI search engines haven't committed to using it, and it won't make ChatGPT recommend you on its own. Treat it as a low-effort extra next to the things that matter more.

A clean summary instead of guesswork
AI tools that read your site have to wade through menus, pop-ups and theme code. An llms.txt hands them your name, a one-line description and your key pages in plain text, so any assistant that does read it gets the basics right.
Your best pages, not your tag archives
A sitemap lists everything, including filters, tags and old pages. An llms.txt is curated: your services or collections, pricing, contact details, policies and the articles that answer customer questions.
Honest about the limits
Google has said publicly that it doesn't use llms.txt for Search, and the big AI assistants haven't documented using it to choose which businesses to recommend. Some AI tools do read it when pointed at a site. Being cited still depends on crawlable pages, clear answers and what others say about you.

How to use the llms.txt Generator & Validator

  1. Enter your website

    Type your domain. If it's a Shopify store we switch to the Shopify layout by ourselves: collections, products, pages and policies.

  2. Review and edit the file

    We read your sitemap and up to 25 pages. Check the summary line, fix any title that reads oddly and delete anything you'd rather AI tools skip.

  3. Publish it at /llms.txt

    Download or copy the file and follow the steps for your platform. On Shopify you add it to your theme as a template, which replaces the llms.txt Shopify creates by default.

  4. Validate the live file

    Switch to Validate and enter your domain. We check the format, the content type and a sample of links, and tell you exactly what to fix.

Questions about the llms.txt Generator & Validator

llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of a website (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a curated list of its most useful pages. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024. The format is simple: a # title with the site name, a > one-line summary, optional notes, then ## sections that list links as "- [Page title](https://full-address): short description". An ## Optional section holds links that tools can skip.

There's no public confirmation that ChatGPT uses llms.txt to decide what to cite or recommend. Adoption across AI tools is mixed: some assistants and coding tools read the file when someone points them at a site, and many software documentation sites publish one, but no major AI search engine has said it relies on it. Add one because it's cheap and keeps your key facts in one place, not because it guarantees citations. Crawlable pages that clearly answer customer questions do far more for your chances.

Shopify now creates an llms.txt for every store automatically, so most stores already have one at yourstore.com/llms.txt. Shopify's file gives AI shopping agents instructions for browsing and checkout, but it doesn't list your collections, pages and policies. To publish your own, go to Online Store, then Themes, then Edit code, and add a template named llms.txt.liquid with your file inside. Shopify then serves it at /llms.txt instead of the default. Generate the file here, paste it in, and run the validator to confirm.

robots.txt tells crawlers where they may and may not go, a sitemap lists every page you want search engines to find, and llms.txt is a short, hand-picked guide to your most important pages for AI tools. robots.txt controls access, a sitemap helps discovery and llms.txt adds context. They work together. An llms.txt doesn't override robots.txt: a page blocked there stays blocked, even if llms.txt links to it.

llms.txt is the index: a summary plus links. llms-full.txt is a companion convention where a site puts the full text of its key pages into one file, so a tool can read everything in a single request. It's most common on software documentation sites. Most small businesses and Shopify stores only need llms.txt. Our validator reports llms-full.txt as optional information, never as a problem.

Open the Validate tab and enter your domain; the checker fetches yourdomain.com/llms.txt and tests it. It confirms the file loads with status 200 as plain text rather than a web page, starts with one # title, has a > summary, groups links under ## sections, uses full https addresses without duplicates, and that a sample of up to 10 links actually load. You can also paste a file you haven't published yet. Every problem comes with the line numbers and the exact fix.

List the pages that answer what customers ask before they buy or book: what you offer, prices, where you work, how to contact you, and your shipping, returns and privacy policies. Stores should list collections and a few best sellers rather than every product. Put lower-priority links under ## Optional, and leave out tag pages, carts, account pages, search results and thin archive pages.
