Answer engine optimization tools, and what the evidence says they can do
Answer engine optimization tools help you get named inside AI answers. The ones with real AEO features in 2026 are Writesonic (from $79/mo annual), Frase (from $39/mo annual), Scalenut (from $59/mo), Surfer's AI Tracker ($82/mo) and Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/mo annual). Schema-only and llms.txt-only products are not citation levers.
Every page ranking for this term is published by a vendor that ranks itself first, and almost none of them cite a study. This one prices eleven tools from their own pages, then tells you which AEO tactics have controlled evidence behind them — including the one that measurably backfired. Disclosure: RankBull is ours.

Methodology
How we compared, and what this list is not
Disclosure first: RankBull is our product. To make this page worth your time anyway, prices come from each vendor's own pricing page read on 30 September 2026, feature claims come from their own product pages, and the evidence section below includes findings that undercut our own category.
This page covers tools that help you change the answer: content production, on-page work, crawler access, schema, outreach. If what you want is a dashboard that tells you what AI currently says about you, that is a different shortlist — we ranked fifteen of those by price in our LLM SEO tools comparison, and the two lists overlap at the tools that do both.
One tool that appears on other lists is missing here on purpose. MarketMuse was acquired by Siteimprove in November 2024, its prices are no longer published, and as of today its own site shows no AI-answer features at all. It is a content planning tool, not an AEO tool, and listing it as one would waste your time.
Every listicle ranking for this term today puts its own product first. Read the methodology on any of them, including this one, before you read the ranking.

What the evidence actually supports
The AEO category sells three main tactics. Only one of them has controlled evidence behind it, and one has evidence pointing the other way.
- Structured, quotable content — supported — The peer-reviewed paper that coined generative engine optimization (Aggarwal et al., published at ACM SIGKDD in 2024) ran controlled tests on a benchmark of generative-engine queries and reported visibility gains of up to 40% from content changes such as adding citations, quotations and statistics. Its honest limit: it measures share within a fixed set of candidate sources, not whether an engine finds you at all.
- FAQ schema and JSON-LD — not supported — Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 against roughly 4,000 matched control pages. AI Mode citations moved +2.4% and ChatGPT +2.2%, both statistically indistinguishable from zero, while Google AI Overviews fell 4.6%, a small but statistically significant decline. Their conclusion was that for pages already being cited, adding JSON-LD "isn't going to be the unlock." Google's own documentation says the same thing more simply: no special structured data is required for its AI features.
- llms.txt — not supported — Google's documentation states Google Search does not use llms.txt and that having one neither helps nor harms visibility. Google's John Mueller said in 2025 that no AI system was using it. Several tools sell an llms.txt generator as an AEO feature; treat it as housekeeping.
- Third-party mentions — strongly indicated — Ahrefs' September 2026 measurement of ChatGPT citations put Reddit at 16.8% and Wikipedia at 7.0% of all citations. The pages AI quotes about your category are frequently not yours, which is why being included in other people's comparisons matters as much as publishing your own.
The tools, by what they actually do
Sorted by capability rather than by who paid for the best marketing. Prices are the cheapest tier you can buy without a sales call.
- Writesonic — from $79/mo on annual billing — The widest genuine AEO stack: tracking, a prioritised action centre, schema automation including FAQ and product markup, robots.txt auditing for GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and citation outreach. The catch is engine gating — self-serve tiers cover ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, while the other seven platforms are Enterprise-only.
- Frase — from $39/mo on annual billing — Article generation that publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Wix and Sanity with schema attached, plus a GEO score, AI crawler log monitoring and visibility tracking. Engines are tier-gated: ChatGPT and Google AI at Starter, Perplexity at Professional, Claude and Gemini at Scale. Seven-day trial.
- Scalenut — from $59/mo — A GEO action centre with visibility tracking and article generation, four seats even on the entry tier, and ChatGPT plus Google AI Overviews included. Perplexity arrives at the $199 Professional tier. Watch the annual pricing, which is currently a heavy promotional discount rather than a standing rate.
- Surfer — AI Search Analytics at $82/mo — The standalone tracker is good value: 50 prompts daily across five brand spaces, covering ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews. The content side is still the classic editor, its agent is marked coming soon, and its homepage claim that Surfer-optimised content is more likely to be cited carries no published source.
- Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit — $99/mo on annual billing — Real measurement at a knowable price: 25 prompts tracked daily on one domain, an AI-readiness audit, and competitor prompt research. No content execution. Extra users are $45 a month.
- Clearscope — $129/mo — Unlimited users and projects is genuinely unusual, and the content grading is well regarded. But the AI tracking covers only ChatGPT and Gemini, with no Perplexity or AI Overviews, and there is no schema or publishing.
- Jasper — GEO Hub, Business tier only — The GEO Hub tracks citation rates and rewrites content for clarity and citation potential across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Pro at $69 per seat does not include it; the AEO features require the custom Business tier with a twelve-month minimum. There is a free GEO diagnostic worth running.
- AirOps and Conductor — enterprise, price on request — AirOps has a free Solo tier with ChatGPT insights, then pricing behind signup. Conductor's AI Search Performance sells on usage-based response credits with no published price. Both are built for teams with a procurement process.
- Schema App — quote only, 12-month minimum — Does enterprise structured data properly, at scale, with a content knowledge graph. Despite the "AI Visibility" headline on its site, it does not track AI answers — and per the evidence above, schema alone is not what earns citations.
According to RankBull's read of eleven AEO tools' own pricing pages on 30 September 2026, four of them cover only two or three AI engines on the cheapest tier you can actually buy, while naming eight or more on the homepage. Check the plan, not the logo wall.
Our entry, disclosed
Where RankBull fits, and what it doesn't do
RankBull starts at $29 a month: ten tracked prompts across two AI engines on one site, weekly refreshes, with articles written against the gaps and published to WordPress, Shopify, Framer or a webhook. Growth at $79 covers twenty prompts and four engines; Scale at $199 covers fifty prompts and six engines. There is also a one-time licence at $499, currently $99 for the first ten buyers, that you self-host on your own API keys.
What we do not do: schema deployment at enterprise scale, which is Schema App's job and which the evidence suggests is not a citation lever anyway. We do not run citation outreach for you the way Writesonic's agent does. And at two engines on the entry tier, we track fewer surfaces than Surfer's $82 tracker.
What we do that most of this list does not: hand a small business the finished page rather than the recommendation. If you have a marketing team that will act on a prioritised list, Writesonic or Frase will serve you well. If nobody on your team is going to write those pages this month, a tool that writes and publishes them is the difference between a report and a result.
Four things to be sceptical of
The category is young and the marketing has outrun the evidence in specific, checkable ways.
- Unsourced citation-lift claims — Several vendors publish a percentage by which their tool increases AI citations, with no study, sample size or method attached. Ask for the methodology; the one rigorous public test of schema found a small negative effect on AI Overviews.
- "AI Visibility" in a product name that tracks nothing — At least one tool in this category leads with AI visibility and does not query any AI engine. Check whether the product sends prompts and shows answers, or scores your markup.
- Engine lists that belong to the Enterprise tier — Homepages name eight or ten platforms; self-serve plans often cover two or three. Confirm which engines your specific tier includes before paying.
- Promotional annual pricing quoted as the real price — One vendor here shows a 60% annual discount that would make it the cheapest option on the list. Check whether that rate is standing or a promotion before you plan a budget around it.

Step-by-step
Pick an AEO tool in ten minutes
The feature tables converge. These four questions do not.
- 01
Decide whether you need reporting or output
If someone on your team will write pages this month, buy the best tracker you can afford. If nobody will, buy the tool that writes and publishes, or the reporting will sit unread.
- 02
Check which engines your tier covers
Ignore the homepage logos and read the plan you would actually buy. Three of the tools here cover two or three engines on their entry tier while advertising eight or more.
- 03
Ask for the evidence behind any citation claim
If a vendor claims a percentage lift in AI citations, ask for the sample size and method. The best public test of schema found a small negative effect, so scepticism is warranted.
- 04
Count your questions, then convert
Most small businesses have ten to thirty real buying questions. Price the tiers that cover that number across the engines you chose, and ignore prompt allowances in the thousands.

Questions about answer engine optimization tools.
Each question below ships as FAQPage schema. AI assistants retrieve these answers directly when shoppers and operators search for the same questions.
What are answer engine optimization tools?
AEO tools help your business get named inside AI-generated answers rather than only ranked as a link. In practice they do some combination of four things: track what AI engines say about you, audit whether AI crawlers can read your site, produce or rewrite content that answers buyer questions, and pursue mentions on the third-party sites those answers cite.
What is the cheapest answer engine optimization tool?
Among tools with real AEO features and public pricing, Frase starts at $39 a month on annual billing, Scalenut at $59, and RankBull at $29. AirOps has a free Solo tier limited to ChatGPT insights, and Jasper offers a free GEO diagnostic, both of which give you a reading without paying.
Does FAQ schema improve AI citations?
The available evidence says no. Ahrefs compared 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD with about 4,000 matched control pages and found changes of +2.4% in AI Mode and +2.2% in ChatGPT, both within noise, and a statistically significant 4.6% decline in AI Overview citations. Google's documentation also states no special structured data is required for its AI features. Schema still earns rich results in classic search, which is a separate and valid reason to use it.
What is the difference between AEO tools and LLM SEO tools?
Mostly marketing. In practice the useful split is between tools that measure what AI says about you and tools that change it. Several products do both. We ranked the measurement tools by price separately; this page focuses on the ones that produce or fix content.
Do I need an AEO tool, or can I do this manually?
You can start manually and should. Write the ten questions your customers ask, put them to ChatGPT and Gemini, record who gets named, and check that AI crawlers can reach your site. A tool becomes worth paying for when you need that repeated on a schedule, across engines, with the content work attached.
Does publishing llms.txt help with answer engine optimization?
There is no evidence that it does. Google states its search does not use llms.txt and that having one will neither help nor harm your visibility, and Google's John Mueller has said no AI system currently uses it. Some tools sell llms.txt generation as an AEO feature; treat it as harmless housekeeping.
Is MarketMuse an AEO tool?
Not in 2026. Siteimprove completed its acquisition of MarketMuse in November 2024, its prices are no longer published, and its site lists no AI-answer features. It remains a content planning tool, which is a different job.
Which AEO tool works best for a Shopify store?
Most of this list treats a store as an ordinary website, which misses product and collection pages. RankBull ships a native Shopify app with a free scan, one-click fixes and product FAQs, and Goodie advertises SKU-level commerce visibility. Ask any vendor specifically how it handles product pages before buying.
