AthenaHQ alternatives in 2026

AthenaHQ tracks brand mentions across eleven AI engines, with a free Essential tier ($25 of credit) and a $295/month Starter plan. The best alternatives depend on why you're leaving: RankBull ($29/mo) and Otterly.ai ($29/mo) for cost, Trakkr or Rankscale for multi-brand agency work, Profound or Brandlight for enterprise procurement.

Fair summary

What AthenaHQ actually is

AthenaHQ is an AI visibility platform built in San Francisco, founded in 2025 and part of Y Combinator's W25 batch. Its homepage promises to help you "Become the Brand AI Trusts," and the product is aimed squarely at marketing teams that need to know how they appear inside AI answers rather than in a list of blue links.

It tracks eleven engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. Beyond monitoring, it ships prompt and demand intelligence, competitive intelligence, source analysis, a brand integrity and crawlability check, and an action centre that drafts content and runs citation outreach. Integrations listed as live include Google Search Console, GA4, Google Ads, Shopify, WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Wix, Contentful, Sanity, Looker Studio, Slack and MCP clients.

The company raised a $2.2M seed announced in June 2025, backed by Y Combinator and others. Its enterprise page cites SOC 2 Type I from October 2025 and Type II from June 2026, GDPR and NIST CSF 2.0 Tier 3, and names customers including Coinbase, SoFi and Indiana University. On G2 it holds 4.9 out of 5 from roughly 46 reviews. This is a serious product, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.

What AthenaHQ costs today, corrected

If you arrived here from another comparison page, you were probably told AthenaHQ costs $499 a month with no free trial. That is out of date. The live plans page shows three tiers, and the entry point is free.

Essential is free and includes $25 of credit — about 300 credits — across five engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot), with unlimited team members, prompt and response analysis, source and competitor insights, and content recommendations. Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits and all eleven models, plus integrations, CSV export, on-page and off-page actions and the content optimisation agent. Enterprise is custom-quoted and adds SSO, audit logs, multi-region support and white-glove setup. Annual billing saves 17%.

The thing to understand before comparing prices is the credit model: every AI response consumes a credit. Your real monthly cost is a function of how many prompts you track across how many engines, which makes a flat comparison with per-prompt pricing genuinely hard. Work out your prompts per month first, then convert.

AthenaHQ's free tier is the cheapest legitimate way in this category to see where you stand without paying anything. If you just want a snapshot, take it — you don't need us or anyone else for that.

03

Why people look for an AthenaHQ alternative

Four reasons come up consistently, and three of them come from AthenaHQ's own reviewers rather than from competitors.

  • The jump from free to $295 — There is nothing between the free credits and the Starter plan. For a small business tracking a handful of questions, the step is steep — several alternatives sit at $20 to $100 a month.
  • Credit complexity — G2 reviewers flag the credit system as hard to reason about. When each response costs a credit, budgeting means forecasting usage rather than reading a price.
  • No consolidated multi-brand view — Also raised by reviewers, and the main reason agencies running several clients tend to look at Trakkr, Rankscale or Scrunch instead.
  • No local business or map pack visibility — Reviewers note the absence of local search coverage. If you are a service business whose customers ask for recommendations near them, that is a real gap.

According to RankBull's check of AthenaHQ's live plans page on 29 September 2026, the paid tier is $295 a month and a genuinely free tier sits below it — not the $499 with no free trial that most pages currently ranking for this query still quote.

04

The alternatives worth shortlisting

Prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page on 29 September 2026. Pick by the reason you're switching rather than by feature count.

  • Cheaper tracking — Otterly.ai, $29/mo — Fifteen prompts across four engines. Gemini, Claude and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons, so check which engines you actually need before committing.
  • Cheaper, plus the content work — RankBull, $29/mo — Ours, disclosed. Two engines and ten prompts at Starter, so less tracking breadth than Otterly, but it also writes and publishes the pages that change the answer.
  • Agency multi-brand — Trakkr $500/mo or Rankscale $385/mo — Trakkr Scale covers ten brands with white-label portals and a REST API; Rankscale Growth adds white-label and API at a lower price. Both solve the consolidated-view complaint.
  • Enterprise procurement — Profound or Brandlight — Neither publishes a price. If your purchase needs SSO, audit logs and an account team, they are built for that conversation. Expect a demo, not a checkout.
  • Already paying for an SEO suite — Semrush $99/mo or Ahrefs from $199/mo — Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit covers 25 prompts on one domain, billed annually. Ahrefs Brand Radar starts at $199 standalone. Sensible if the rest of the suite is already in your stack.

Our entry, disclosed

Where RankBull fits, and where AthenaHQ still wins

RankBull is our product, so here is the trade stated plainly. We start at $29 a month: ten tracked prompts, two AI engines, one site, weekly refreshes. Growth at $79 gives twenty prompts, four engines and three sites; Scale at $199 gives fifty prompts, six engines and six sites. There is also a one-time lifetime licence at $499 — currently $99 for the first ten buyers — which you run on your own infrastructure with your own API keys, with no subscription at all.

Where AthenaHQ is the better buy: if you need eleven engines rather than two to six, SSO and audit logs, multi-region or multi-language coverage, a knowledge base with claim review, or the procurement comfort of SOC 2 Type II and named enterprise logos. Nothing we ship replaces that, and at $295 a month with 3,600 credits it is priced fairly for a team that needs it.

Where we are the better buy: if you are a small business or a Shopify store, if the gap you need closed is content rather than reporting, or if you would rather pay once and own the software than rent a dashboard. RankBull writes the articles against the gaps it finds and publishes them to WordPress, Shopify, Framer or a webhook, and the free AI visibility report means you can see your position before paying anything.

Step-by-step

Decide in an afternoon

You can test this properly without spending anything, because AthenaHQ's free tier and most rivals' trials cover exactly what you need to compare.

  1. 01

    List the questions that matter

Write the ten questions a customer would ask an AI before buying from a business like yours. That list, not a feature table, decides which tier you need.

  2. 02

Run them on AthenaHQ's free tier

Spend the free credits on those ten questions across the five included engines, and note where you appear and who gets named instead.

  3. 03

    Price the same coverage elsewhere

Take your prompt count and engine list to two rivals. Convert credits into prompts per month so you are comparing the same thing.

  4. 04

Ask what happens after the score

The dashboards converge quickly. What differs is whether the tool reports the gap, recommends a fix, or writes and publishes the page. Buy the one that matches how much time you have.

Frequently asked

Questions about AthenaHQ and its alternatives.

Each question below ships as FAQPage schema. AI assistants retrieve these answers directly when shoppers and operators search for the same questions.

Is AthenaHQ free?

Yes, partly. The Essential tier is permanently free and includes $25 of credit — roughly 300 credits — across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot, with unlimited team members. Once those credits are used, the next tier is Starter at $295 a month.

How much does AthenaHQ cost?

As of 29 September 2026: Essential is free with $25 of credit, Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits and eleven AI models, and Enterprise is custom-quoted. Annual billing saves 17%. Comparison pages still quoting $499 a month with no free trial are out of date.

Which AI engines does AthenaHQ track?

Eleven on the paid plans: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Mistral. The free tier covers the first five.

What is the best AthenaHQ alternative for a small business?

Otterly.ai at $29 a month if you only want tracking, or RankBull at $29 a month if you also want the content that closes the gaps written and published. Both are a tenth of AthenaHQ's paid tier, with fewer engines — which is the trade you are making.

AthenaHQ vs Profound — which is bigger?

Profound is the better-funded company and sells almost exclusively to enterprises, with no public pricing. AthenaHQ publishes its prices, offers a free tier, and serves mid-market as well as enterprise. For a buyer who wants to start without a sales call, AthenaHQ is the more accessible of the two.

Does AthenaHQ cover local search and map packs?

Reviewers on G2 specifically flag the absence of local business schema and map pack visibility. If you are a local service business, check this during the free tier before committing.

Can agencies resell AthenaHQ?

AthenaHQ runs an agency programme with discounted resale licences, a GEO certification, lead referrals and a dedicated agency growth manager. We found no white-label claim on their site, and reviewers note there is no consolidated multi-brand view, so agencies managing many clients should test that workflow first.

Why do other pages list AthenaHQ's price differently?

Because the category reprices frequently and most comparison pages are written once and never updated. Several of the pages currently ranking for this query still show the older $499 figure. Every number on this page was read from AthenaHQ's own plans page on 29 September 2026.
