Your meta tags are the first thing Google, social apps and AI read

Before anyone visits your page, a search engine, a chat app or an AI assistant has already read a handful of tags in its code. They decide the headline people see, the picture on a shared link, and sometimes whether the page shows up at all. In 2026 the tags that matter are short: a title, a meta description, a canonical URL, a robots tag, Open Graph tags and an X card. Everything else is optional.

Google builds your search result from them
The title tag is the most likely source of the blue headline in Google, and the meta description is often the text underneath. Google can rewrite both, but it rewrites less when they are clear, specific and the right length. A good title and description are the cheapest way to earn more clicks from rankings you already have.
Shared links and AI chats use Open Graph
When someone pastes your link into Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, iMessage or a chat with an AI assistant, the preview card comes from og:title, og:description and og:image. Without them, the card is a bare link or a random image from the page, and far fewer people tap it.
AI answer engines need to know what the page is
ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews read the page itself, but the title and description are the quickest summary of what it covers. When they're vague ("Home", "Products") the page is harder to match to a question. Specific tags help an AI engine label and cite you correctly.
One wrong tag can hide a page
A leftover noindex from a theme, SEO app or staging site removes a page from Google. A canonical pointing at another URL tells Google to show that URL instead. Both are common on small business sites and Shopify stores, and both are invisible unless you check the code, which is what this tool does.

How to use the Meta Tag Generator & Checker

  1. Check your page or start fresh

Choose Check my page and enter any address, like yourstore.com/products/wallet. The tool fetches the live page and fills every field with the tags it actually has. Building a new page? Choose Start from scratch.

  2. Fix what the checks flag

Each check says what's wrong in plain words and how to fix it: a title Google will cut off, a missing image, an invalid X handle, a noindex you didn't mean. Edit the fields and the checks update as you type. Image size is measured from the real image, not from numbers typed into a form.

  3. Preview it on Google and social

Switch between Google desktop and mobile, Facebook, LinkedIn and X to see the headline, description and image as people will see them. Titles and descriptions are cut by pixel width, the same way Google does it, instead of by a rough character count.

  4. Copy the tags into your site

Copy the HTML into your page's head, or type the values into your platform. On Shopify, product and collection pages have a search engine listing section; the home page title and description are under Online Store, Preferences. On WordPress, use your SEO plugin's fields.

Recommended lengths and image sizes

Google and social platforms don't publish hard character limits, and they change layouts often. These are the sizes that display well across Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and X today.

TagRecommended sizeGood to know
Title tagAbout 50–60 characters, roughly 580 px on desktopMost important words first. Google cuts by width, so capitals and wide letters use the space faster.
Meta descriptionAbout 140–160 characters, roughly 920 px on desktopPhones show less, so keep the key message in the first 120 characters.
og:titleUp to about 60–90 charactersFacebook and LinkedIn show about two lines. Leave it empty to reuse your title.
og:descriptionAbout one line on FacebookLinkedIn usually hides it in the feed, so don't rely on it alone.
og:image1200×630 px (1.91:1), JPG or PNG, under 5 MBFacebook ignores images under 200×200 px. Keep text away from the edges; cards crop.
LinkedIn link image1200×627 px (1.91:1)Read from og:image. A 1200×630 image works for both.
X summary_large_imageWide image, at least 300×157 px, under 5 MB1200×630 px works well. X crops wider or taller images to fit.
X summarySquare image, at least 144×144 px, under 5 MBShown as a small thumbnail beside the title.
twitter:site / twitter:creator@handle, up to 15 letters, numbers or underscoresThis tool adds the @ for you and leaves out invalid handles.

Questions about the Meta Tag Generator & Checker

You need a title tag, a meta description, a canonical link, Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url) and a twitter:card tag. Add a robots meta tag only when you want to change the default, for example noindex on a thank-you page. Meta keywords are ignored by Google and can be skipped. Charset and viewport tags belong in every page too, but your theme or CMS almost always adds those already.

Aim for about 140–160 characters. Google cuts descriptions by pixel width, roughly 920 pixels on desktop, and shows less on phones, so put the most important message in the first 120 characters. Very short descriptions (under about 70 characters) are often replaced with text from the page. Google may still show a different passage when it matches a particular search better, so write for the main thing people come to the page for.

Open Graph is a set of meta tags, created by Facebook, that tells apps how to show your page when it's shared. The core tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and og:type, written with the property attribute. Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, iMessage and many AI chat apps read them. X reads them too, and adds its own twitter:card tag for the card layout.

Enter the page address in this tool's Check my page mode. It fetches the live page, lists every Open Graph and X tag it finds, flags missing or broken ones, loads the og:image to measure its real size, and previews the card on Facebook, LinkedIn and X. Platforms cache previews, so after fixing tags, use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to refresh the cached card.

For a summary_large_image card, use a wide image of at least 300×157 pixels; 1200×630 pixels works well and matches Open Graph. For a summary card, use a square image of at least 144×144 pixels. Both must be under 5 MB and in JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF format. X falls back to og:image when there's no twitter:image, so one 1200×630 image usually covers X, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Google rewrites titles that don't describe the page well for the search. Common triggers are titles that are too long, stuffed with repeated keywords, in all caps, generic ("Home"), the same across many pages, or that repeat the brand name. Google then uses your main heading, link text or other text on the page. A specific title of about 50–60 characters that matches the page's main heading is rewritten far less often.

No, not for a normal website. Player cards need an approved, embeddable media player and app cards need App Store and Google Play IDs; without those, X shows no card at all. That's why this tool only offers summary and summary_large_image, which work for any page.

Shopify writes the title, meta description, canonical and Open Graph tags for you from each page's search engine listing. Edit them at the bottom of each product, collection, page or blog post in your admin, and set the home page title and description under Online Store, Preferences, where you can also upload the social sharing image. Tags your theme doesn't output can be added in theme.liquid, inside the head section.

Writing meta tags for every page gets old fast.

RankBull writes the title, description and social tags for every article it publishes, inside the limits this tool checks.

Shopify stores: the RankBull app writes missing product and collection meta descriptions in one click.
