Why check your website's SEO and AI readiness

Most small business websites don't have a content problem. They have a plumbing problem: a missing page title, a sitemap nobody submitted, or a robots.txt rule an app added that quietly blocks ChatGPT. Each one is a quick fix once you know about it, and together they decide whether Google and AI assistants can find, read and recommend your business at all.

Google can only rank what it can read
A stray noindex tag, a robots.txt that blocks Googlebot, a store still behind a password page or a missing sitemap can keep pages out of search entirely. These problems are invisible when you browse your own site, which is why they last for months.
Your search result is your first impression
Your page title and meta description are what people read on Google before they decide to click. Too long and they get cut off; missing and Google fills the space with whatever text it picks from the page.
AI assistants are a new front door
Customers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI for recommendations. Those engines send their own crawlers, and those crawlers follow your robots.txt. If they're blocked, your business can't be cited in the answer.
Structured data tells machines who you are
Organization, LocalBusiness and Product schema state your name, location, prices and stock as plain facts. Search engines and AI assistants don't have to guess from your page design, so they describe you accurately.

How to use the Website SEO & AI Checker

  1. Enter your domain

Type your domain, like yourstore.com. Full URLs work too. We check the homepage of that domain, plus its robots.txt, sitemap and llms.txt, from our server the way a crawler would.

  2. Read your two scores

The Google SEO score covers crawling, titles, mobile setup and structured data. The AI readiness score covers AI crawler access, readable content and business details. The headline focuses on whichever is weaker.

  3. Fix the problems first

Checks are sorted with problems at the top. Each one says what we found and exactly how to fix it, with Shopify admin steps when your site runs on Shopify.

  4. Check again after changes

Recent results for the same domain are reused for up to an hour, so give a fix a little time before re-checking. Always re-check after theme, app, plugin or hosting changes, which cause most new problems.

What each check means and how it's scored

Each check passes, needs attention or fails. A pass earns its full weight, a warning earns half and a problem earns nothing. Each score is the points earned divided by the points available, out of 100. Informational checks, like a robots.txt we couldn't load, are left out so they can't drag your score down. The weights favour what stops you being found at all (a noindex tag, a blocked crawler) over polish (a favicon).

Crawler checks read your robots.txt only. A firewall or CDN can still block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them, so run the AI Crawler Checker to test that. If your site runs on Shopify, each fix also shows where to make the change in your Shopify admin.

Questions about the Website SEO & AI Checker

Enter your domain in the checker at the top of this page to get a free Google SEO score and AI readiness score in a few seconds, with no signup. It loads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap and llms.txt the way a crawler would, runs more than 30 checks and gives a plain-English fix for every problem it finds. For page-by-page data about how you actually perform in search, also connect your site to Google Search Console, which is free too.

A score of 80 or above is good, 50 to 79 means there are fixes worth making, and below 50 usually means something is stopping Google from crawling or understanding your site. It's a checklist score, not a ranking prediction: a site can score 100 and still rank below competitors with more helpful content and more links. Fix every red problem first, because those carry the most weight.

AI readiness is how easily AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's Gemini can access and understand your website. It covers whether your robots.txt lets their crawlers in, whether your content is in the HTML rather than loaded later by JavaScript, whether structured data describes your business and products, and optional extras like llms.txt. Being AI-ready doesn't guarantee you'll be recommended, but being blocked means you can't be cited.

Because domain authority (DA) and domain rating (DR) aren't Google metrics. They're estimates that SEO companies calculate from their own paid backlink databases, and Google has said it doesn't use them for ranking. They can be handy for comparing link profiles, but there's no setting you can change to raise them. RankBull focuses on what Google and AI engines actually read and what you can fix today. Real authority comes from earning links and mentions from sites your customers already trust.

Yes. The checker detects Shopify automatically and adds Shopify steps to each fix, such as where to change your homepage title (Online Store, then Preferences) or edit your robots.txt.liquid template. For stores it also opens one of your product pages to check Product structured data, which AI shopping answers rely on, and it flags a storefront that's still password protected.

Usually a rule was added for you: by an SEO or "AI protection" app, a theme or CMS template, or a broad "User-agent: * Disallow: /" left over from when the site was being built. This checker shows the exact robots.txt line that blocks each AI crawler. Firewalls and CDNs such as Cloudflare can also block AI crawlers without touching robots.txt, and the AI Crawler Checker tests for that separately.

No, it's optional. llms.txt is a proposed file that gives AI assistants a short summary of your site with links to your key pages, and no major AI engine has confirmed that it uses it. It only takes a few minutes to publish, so it's a reasonable small extra, but crawler access, readable content and structured data matter far more. That's why it carries a small weight in the AI readiness score.

Check after any theme, app, plugin or hosting change, and about once a month otherwise. Most of the problems this tool finds weren't there when the site launched; an update introduced them. Results for the same domain are reused for up to an hour, so wait a little after making a fix before you check again.

A checkup finds problems. RankBull fixes them every week.

Track your AI visibility, get keyword ideas from your own Search Console data, and publish the pages that close the gaps.

Works on Shopify stores. The RankBull app fixes product meta descriptions, image alt text and schema in one click.
