What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your business when people ask buying questions. It is measured by mentions, citations and share of voice across repeated prompts. Unlike a Google ranking, it is probabilistic: the same question can return different brands run to run.
Every definition of this term comes from a company selling something, including ours. So this page quotes the vendors side by side, then separates what Google and OpenAI actually document from what the industry is guessing at — with a link and a date on every claim.

The short definition, and the two things it can mean
AI visibility is the degree to which an AI assistant names, cites or recommends your business when someone asks it a question. If a customer asks ChatGPT for the best bakery in Austin and three bakeries get named, those three have AI visibility for that question and everyone else has none.
Be aware that the phrase has a second, unrelated meaning. In AI governance and engineering, "AI visibility" means making AI systems transparent and observable to the people running them. A page ranking on Google's first page for this term right now is about that meaning, not this one. This page is about the marketing sense: whether AI answers mention your business.
There is no official definition of either. No standards body publishes one, and neither Google nor OpenAI uses the term in their documentation. Every definition in circulation comes from a company that sells a tool to measure it, which is worth knowing before you treat any single one as authoritative.
Useful mental model: a Google ranking is a position in a list. AI visibility is whether you are in the sentence. There is no page two of an AI answer.
Four definitions, dated
How the major vendors define it (and where they disagree)
Reading these side by side tells you more than any single one. The disagreements are real and they matter when you compare tools.
- Semrush (knowledge base, 2026) — Treats AI Visibility as a benchmark score from 0 to 100 showing how often your brand appears in AI answers compared with competitors, and splits out mentions, citations and share of voice as separate metrics.
- Conductor (updated January 2026) — "AI visibility refers to how a brand's content, products, or offerings appear in AI-powered search experiences like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other answer engines."
- Similarweb (April 2026) — Defines it as a marketing metric measuring how often and how accurately a brand is mentioned, cited or recommended in AI answers — folding accuracy into the definition, which the others do not.
- Frase (March 2026) — "The measure of how frequently and prominently your brand, content, or website appears in responses generated by AI-powered search engines and assistants."
How AI visibility is measured
Three metrics do most of the work, and they are not interchangeable. Mentions count the prompts where your brand is named. Citations count the answers that link your domain as a source. Share of voice expresses your mentions as a percentage of the competitive set for a defined list of prompts. A tool can show a healthy mention count while your citation count is zero, which means AI is recommending you without sending you traffic.
The measurement method matters more than the dashboard. A tool worth paying for sends real prompts to real engines and records the answers. A tool that scores your site's markup and calls the result AI visibility has measured your HTML, not your visibility. Ask any vendor to show you an actual answer about your business before you pay.
The honest caveat almost nobody publishes: these numbers are noisy. The same prompt can return different brands on consecutive runs, so a single check is a sample, not a measurement. Semrush's own research — 230,000 prompts and over 100 million citations tracked from July to October 2025 — recorded ChatGPT's citation of Reddit collapsing from roughly 60% of responses to about 10% within weeks. If the sources an engine trusts can move that far that fast, treat small week-to-week changes in your own score as noise and watch the direction over a month instead.
According to RankBull's own crawler testing, a site can pass every content check and still be invisible to ChatGPT: OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are separate controls, and blocking GPTBot — which many sites do deliberately — has no effect on whether ChatGPT's search can cite you.

Why it matters now, in numbers you can check
The reach is real. At Google I/O in May 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion. OpenAI said in March 2026 that ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users, and that search usage inside it had nearly tripled in a year.
The click loss is also real, and better evidenced than most claims in this field. Pew Research Center tracked the actual browsing of 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025: when an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. Ahrefs, studying 300,000 keywords in February 2026, found the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.
But keep the scale honest. Semrush's traffic study of more than 50,000 websites across 2025 found AI referral traffic grew 66% while still accounting for less than 0.15% of total visits. The near-term risk for most small businesses is not that ChatGPT replaces Google as a traffic source — it is that the clicks you already earn on Google get absorbed by an answer you are not part of.
One reason to care anyway: the traffic that does arrive behaves differently. Similarweb's global ecommerce report covering July 2024 to June 2025 put the conversion rate for ChatGPT-referred ecommerce visits at 11.4%, against 5.3% for organic search. Fewer visitors, further along in deciding.
How AI engines decide which businesses to name
This is where most advice becomes guesswork, so it is worth separating what is documented from what is merely observed or sold.
Documented by Google, in its AI features and your website guide: its generative AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems." It describes grounding — retrieving relevant pages from the Search index to support an answer — and query fan-out, where the model issues several related searches behind a single question. That last mechanism is the strongest documented argument for covering the cluster of questions around a topic rather than one keyword. Google also states plainly that structured data is not required for generative AI search and that there is no special markup to add.
Documented by OpenAI, in its crawler documentation: OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features, and sites opted out of it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is for model training, and ChatGPT-User handles user-triggered fetches. These are separate controls — blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, and blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
Observed but not documented: which sites get cited most. Measurements from Ahrefs in September 2026 and Semrush in late 2025 both put Reddit and Wikipedia at the top of ChatGPT's most-cited domains, with mainstream publishers and review sites behind them. That is a real pattern and a reasonable thing to act on, but it is a measurement of behaviour, not a published rule, and Semrush's data shows it shifting sharply over months.
Speculation, and it should be labelled as such: llms.txt files, content chunking strategies, entity tuning and training-data recency. None are documented by any engine as ranking factors.
Five things people get wrong
Each of these is contradicted by a primary source, not by our opinion.
- "You need an llms.txt file" — Google's documentation states it does not use them and that maintaining one will neither help nor harm your visibility in Google Search. John Mueller said in 2025 that no AI system was using them, and in 2026 that the idea remains speculative. Publish one if you like — just do not count it as a strategy.
- "Schema markup gets you into AI answers" — Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search and no special markup exists for it. Schema still earns rich results in classic search, which is reason enough to have it — but that is a different job.
- "You must rewrite your content for AI" — Google's guidance says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces, no ideal page length, and no need to write in a specific way for generative AI search.
- "Blocking GPTBot keeps me out of ChatGPT" — It does the opposite of what most people intend. GPTBot controls training; OAI-SearchBot controls whether you appear in ChatGPT's search answers. Many sites block the wrong one and lose visibility they wanted to keep.
- "AI has already replaced search traffic" — Not yet. AI referrals were under 0.15% of total visits across 50,000+ sites in 2025 even after 66% growth. The measurable loss today is clicks on Google, not visits from ChatGPT.
How to check your own AI visibility this week
You do not need to buy anything to get a first reading, and a small business can do this in an afternoon.
Start with Search Console. Google rolled its generative AI performance data out to all websites by 31 August 2026, so impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode now appear in your Search performance reports. It is impression-side only for now, but it is first-party and free.
Then ask the engines yourself. Write the ten questions a customer would ask before buying from a business like yours, put each one to ChatGPT and Gemini, and record who gets named. Run them twice on different days — the variation between runs is the thing most people miss and exactly why single checks mislead.
Then check you are reachable at all. Confirm your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and the other AI search crawlers, and that no firewall or CDN rule is blocking them, because a site AI cannot fetch cannot be recommended. Only after those three steps is it worth paying a tool to track the same questions continuously.

Step-by-step
Measure your AI visibility without paying anyone
A first reading in about an hour, using only free sources. Do this before you shortlist tools.
- 01
Open Search Console
Check your Search performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, rolled out to all sites from 31 August 2026. This tells you whether Google's AI surfaces are already showing you.
- 02
Ask ten buying questions
Write the ten questions a customer asks before choosing a business like yours, then put each to ChatGPT and Gemini. Record who gets named and which sources the answer cites.
- 03
Run them again two days later
Repeat the same ten questions. The differences between the two runs are your noise band, and they tell you how much any single score is worth.
- 04
Confirm the crawlers can reach you
Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and other AI search crawlers and that no firewall challenge blocks them. A page AI cannot fetch cannot be cited.

5 brands
ChatGPT
More than 900 million weekly users as of March 2026, with search usage nearly tripling in a year. OAI-SearchBot controls whether you appear in its search answers.
Google AI Overviews
Over 2.5 billion monthly users as of May 2026, grounded in Google's core Search index, with impressions now reported in Search Console.
Gemini
The Gemini app passed 900 million monthly users in May 2026, and cites noticeably fewer sources per answer than ChatGPT.
Perplexity
Smaller in reach but citation-heavy by design, which makes it a useful early indicator of which of your pages AI systems consider quotable.
Claude
Uses separate crawlers for search and for training, so allow or block each deliberately rather than with one blanket rule.
Frequently asked
Common questions about AI visibility.
Each question below ships as FAQPage schema. AI assistants retrieve these answers directly when shoppers and operators search for the same questions.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews name your business when people ask relevant questions. It is usually measured as mentions, citations and share of voice across a fixed set of prompts, run repeatedly because answers vary between runs.
How is AI visibility measured?
By sending a defined list of real buyer questions to AI engines on a schedule and recording which brands are named and which sources are cited. Mentions count the prompts where you appear, citations count answers that link your site, and share of voice compares you with competitors on the same prompts.
Is AI visibility the same as GEO or AEO?
Broadly yes, and the acronyms are mostly marketing. Google's own guidance says optimising for generative AI search is still SEO. Generative engine optimisation does have an academic origin in a 2023 research paper, but no engine documents a separate ranking system for it. AI visibility is the measurement; GEO and AEO are names for the work.
Does an llms.txt file improve AI visibility?
There is no evidence that it does. Google's documentation states it does not use llms.txt and that having one neither helps nor harms your visibility in Google Search, and Google's John Mueller has said no AI system currently uses it. It is cheap and harmless to publish, but it is housekeeping, not a ranking tactic.
How do I check if ChatGPT can see my website?
Check that your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, which is the crawler that determines whether your site can appear in ChatGPT's search answers, and confirm that no firewall or CDN rule is blocking it. Blocking GPTBot only opts you out of model training, not out of ChatGPT search.
Does traffic from AI convert better than search traffic?
In ecommerce, the evidence suggests yes. Similarweb's global ecommerce report covering July 2024 to June 2025 measured an 11.4% conversion rate for ChatGPT-referred visits against 5.3% for organic search. The volume is far smaller: AI referrals were still under 0.15% of all web visits across a 50,000-site study in 2025.
How often does AI visibility change?
Constantly, and more than most dashboards admit. Semrush tracked ChatGPT's citation of Reddit falling from roughly 60% of responses to about 10% within weeks in late 2025. Treat any single reading as a sample, compare month over month rather than day to day, and be sceptical of tools that report a precise score without a noise band.
What is an AI visibility audit?
A structured check of three things: whether AI crawlers can reach and read your site, what AI engines currently say when asked the questions your customers ask, and which competitors and sources those answers favour. The output should be a list of pages to write or fix, not just a score.
